Parenting complex children WELL

Parents, the challenge and the opportunity rest in your hands.

There is no greater environment that heals and helps or hurts and harms than at home. With the best of intentions we may not even know that we are hurting each other.

Be the parent you most want to be.

Regardless of diagnoses or challenging symptoms or behaviours, we want to show up as the person and parent that our child most needs us to be. And this can feel really tough at times, I know.

I walk this path as both a parent of complex kids and a parent coach and I have been on this journey for over 20 years.

This is a deeply supportive and empowering course for parents who want to shift from reactivity to calm connection. Learn how to lead your home with confidence, compassion, and clarity — even in the messiest moments.

A 3-part parenting framework

Course structure

This is about understanding yourself and understanding your child better. When we know better we do better, so here we start to know ourselves and our children well.

  • What is going on in all our internal worlds?
  • How are the internal worlds impacting behaviour?
  • Presence, awareness, and curiosity
  • Your parenting triggers, goals, methods, and defaults
  • Base states and what gets you “flipping your lid”
  • Key ‘Know Yourself’ tools & processes
  • FOG (Feelings, Options, Goals) framework
  • Values-led parenting

This is where the growth and development happens for both parent and child. Parent and child are both learning their roles and how to grow into them — we grow together.

  • Growing more resilient nervous systems
  • Growing from compliance (or a lack) towards cooperation and collaboration
  • The “YES Brain” vs “NO Brain” (adapted from Dr Dan Siegel)
  • Chaos vs rigidity — understanding your nervous system
  • Self-care, stress recovery, and resilience
  • Tools for calming and co-regulation
  • Teaching and modeling better emotional responses
  • Your Parenting Manifesto

This is where expression and communication happen, and we explore how we can all show up in the home better.

  • Tools for empathy
  • Tools for soothing
  • Tools for safety
  • Tools for building secure attachment
  • How to support children effectively
  • Healthy connection and relationship habits
  • The 4 S’s: Seen, Soothed, Safe, Supported
  • Connection > correction
  • Agreements, boundaries, emotional attunement
  • Repair after rupture
  • Tools for deeper communication, validation, and belonging
  • Shaping a family culture of safety and growth

About your facilitator

Colleen Wilson

Coach | Parent Mentor | Enneagram Practitioner

20 years of lived parenting experience with my own high-needs kids and 15 years of studying and teaching the science of parenting have equipped me with deep understanding and insight and powerful tools and practices to transform even the most complex home environments to bring out the best version of each family member.

This is evermore critical with children (and parents) with sensitive Nervous Systems and struggling with their mental health, navigating a neurotypical world with neuro-differences or living with other challenges and complex or high needs. I SEE YOU!

The home environment signals the Nervous System and the Nervous System impacts how we all ‘do’ life. It’s time to give ourselves and our kids the best opportunity to be us in this world.
